A
lady fly fisher fishing by herself on the Wingecarribee River near
Berrima in windy conditions had an unfortunate accident, while false
casting the fly, it hit the right side of her face piercing
the lobe of her right ear.
Cutting the line close to the fly she drove to Berrima to get help, parking her vehicle she headed for the Post Office to enquire the location of the nearest Doctors surgery. Unfortunately walking towards the Post Office the blood from her wound attracted flies, accidently while fending off the flies, her right hand brushing past the fly on the side of her face, the barb on the hook impaling her right index finger adding to the predicament and drawing people’s attention as it looked although she was pointing to her problem!
Entering the Post Office with her finger attached to her ear,
blood dripping down the side of her face, imagine the Postmasters
surprise, “Please can you direct me to the nearest Doctors surgery”!
Not sure what fly she was using as it was the start of the season so it
may have been an EARly fly.!!
My own piercing experience
happened after fishing the lower Thredbo river at the beginning of the
2010-11 season, packing up my rod that was still set up into the rear
of the 4x4 the back of my hand brushed
against the fly in the keeper on my rod impaling the fly in the loose
skin on the back of my right hand, after a couple of left handed
attempts to extract it, as I’m right handed I realized I needed help. I drove into Jindabyne stopping at Steve Williamson’s shop
at The Snowline Caravan Resort, entering the shop Steve’s young
assistant enquired if I needed help with something in
the Shop, “ have you a pair of long nosed pliers I
said” yes he said removing the pliers from the draw” can you remove
this fly from my hand I said’ bringing my hand from behind my back,
with a slight sway and two steps backward “no he
said, I can’t help “ do you mean you can’t remove this fly I said ”no
sir”, do you mean I will have to go to Jindabyne Medical Centre I said ”yes" he said.
At the medical centre the Doctor removed it
with a piece of string looped around the bend in the hook slight
downward pressure pulled on the string and out she came, I remarked “
you’ve done that Before “oh yes “he
replied. At the end of last season fishing in Jindabyne I called in to
Steve’s shop with my grandson Shaun hoping to introduce him to Steve
Williamson but he was away, the young guy was behind the
Counter “hello do you remember me I said” sorry sir but we have lots of
people through the shop during the season”, I came in to ask you to
remove a fly from the back of my hand I said ”oh yes I
remember you” said the young man, Shaun laughed at his shocked
expression on his
face.!
